In preparation for our November 2006 trip we distributed a flyer to family and friends, asking for donations to help with projects for Torrington. It was our goal to repair the fence and swing set and to bring playground toys like soccer balls, playground balls, jump ropes etc. As well as classroom supplies. The response was amazing when all was said an done we took 300 lbs of supplies and the money needed to repair the fence.
Upon arriving at Torrington and talking with Paula the principal we learned that the student population had grown to 142. She explained to us that with the help of Marcia Burke and "Friends of Jamaica" they were able to purchase a shipping container to be converted into 2 new classrooms. However they still needed Fluorescent Lights and ceiling fans to complete the project. Since she felt that's what would benefit the school the most that's what we did. A quick trip to Sav La Mar rendered the necessary materials.
Upon returning to the school we set about repairing the swing set, installing new swings and blowing up the sports balls that we had brought. And of course we spent time playing with the kids too.
Talking more with Paula we learned that a father of a couple of her students whom we had met earlier was an electrician that was currently unemployed and in need of work, so we left the balance of donated money to pay him to install the lights and fans.
After receiving hugs from nearly all of the children, we had to be on our way and they needed to return to class, so we said our goodbyes. As we drove away our driver Stephen Positive who had been completely drawn into the day had to pull over on the roadside to compose himself, saying that it had been one of the most amazing days he had ever experienced..... we couldn't have agreed more.
